Alchemy GuideAlchemy - Achieving the Ultimate Wisdom

Alchemy is a very useful crafting profession in WoW. Many players chose to level this profession because it is fairly easy to level it fast and because it is useful in more ways than one. An alchemist mixes, transmutes and creates. His final products are powerful flasks, elixirs, potions, oils and gem, primal and metal bar transmutes.

Alchemy and Herbalism

These two professions just belong together. An Alchemist needs herbs in order to level up his skill and produce and therefore most players that decide to take Alchemy as their primary profession pair it with Herbalism.

 Alchemist’s tools and requirements

In order to create flasks, pots and elixirs an Alchemist needs herbs and vials. These vials can be purchased at any Alchemy Supply vendor in any capital city and in many other cities. Alchemists with a high level skill can also perform useful transmutations with metals and elemental materials. A specific requirement for any transmute is a Philosopher's Stone.

This special kind of stone is created by an Alchemist himself and it needs to be in his inventory whenever he wishes to perform a transmutation. With specific transmutes, the Philosopher's Stone will have a certain cooldown, which means that an Alchemist cannot make another similar transmutation until the cooldown runs off.

Special features of Alchemy

On higher levels a skilled Alchemist is able to create a unique trinket for himself. There are three variations of the same trinket depending on his talent build. For healers and dps casters there is Mercurial Alchemist Stone, for melee dps there is Mighty Alchemist’s Stone and for tanks there is Indestructible Alchemist’s Stone.

All three trinkets have adequate stats and when equipped they increase the effect of healing and mana potions by 40%! Since WOTLK expansion WoW players are only able to use one potion per fight and therefore this trinket comes very useful, especially for mana consumers.

Another useful thing an Alchemist has is the duration of his flasks. A flask once consumed has duration of one hour. However, if you are an Alchemist your flasks will last for two hours! This is very convenient as well as a gold saviour.

Specialization

At higher levels an Alchemist must choose his specialization. He can become Elixir, Potion or Transmute master. By choosing one of these he will be able to occasionally create extra potions, elixirs or an extra transmute.

Discoveries

While transmuting an Alchemist will also occasionally discover a new transmute. Same goes for the pots and elixirs. With WOTLK expansion Alchemists got Northrend Alchemy Research which allows them to discover new recipes. This research can be done every third day since it has a cooldown.

To be able to perform this research an Alchemist will need Adder's Tongue (10), Goldclover (10) and Talandra's Rose (4) which are the herbs found in Northrend. He will also need Enchanted Vials (4) that can be purchased at any Alchemy Supply vendor in Northrend as well as with some General Goods traders.

Flasks vs. Elixirs

Flasks and elixirs once consumed have a certain effect that stays during a certain period. When it comes to elixirs you can combine only Battle and Guardian types of elixirs. Both types of elixir last for an hour but their effect stops if a player dies in battle. Flasks have the same duration, however, their effect continues even after death which many players find more convenient.
